STUDENT VISA

The most important piece of paper you need before you arrive in Canada as an international student is a study permit.

The study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at DLIs (Designated Learning Institutes) in Canada. Before you can apply for a study permit, you must have been accepted at a designated learning institution in Canada. You also need to have the right documents.

FAMILY & SPOUSAL SPONSORSHIP

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and at least 18 years old, you can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada under the Family Class.

These may include:

  • Your spouse
  • Your conjugal or common-law partner
  • Your dependent child (this includes an adopted child) or
  • Other eligible relatives

If your family member can become a permanent resident, they can live, study and work in Canada.

VISITOR VISA

Most travellers need a visitor visa to travel to Canada. A visitor visa (also called a temporary resident visa) is an official document that is pasted in your passport. It shows that you meet the requirements needed to enter Canada. You may be allowed an entry for up to minimum 6 months. You may apply for single entry or multiple entry.


VISITOR RECORD

Extend your stay in Canada as a visitor (stay in Canada longer), you need to apply before your current status expires.

EXPRESS ENTRY

Express Entry is used to manage applications for permanent residence under these 3 federal economic immigration programs:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • The Canadian Experience Class

Anyone who is accepted into the Express Entry pool could get an Invitation to apply for permanent residence. Draws to invite candidates to apply takes place regularly over the course of each year. Top ranking candidates are picked up no matter when they were accepted into the pool. If you are invited to apply, you will have 60 days to submit a complete application for Permanent Residence online.

FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM

Federal skilled workers (FSW) are chosen as permanent residents based on their ability to settle in Canada and take part in Canadian economy. We assess them on their: English/French skills, work experience, education and other factors that have been shown to help them prosper in Canada.

FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES PROGRAM

This program is for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

CANADIAN EXPERIENCE CLASS

To apply for permanent resident status through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC):

  1. You must have the required work experience in Canada and it must have been acquired while you had the proper work permits or authorizations.
  2. ​​You must also be able to communicate in one of Canada's two official languages.

SUPER VISA

Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents may also apply for Super Visa for your parents. A super visa lets parents and grandparents visit their children and grandchildren for up to 2 years at a time. It's a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years.

PERMANENT RESIDENCY

Apply to become PR in Canada-A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are citizens of other countries but enjoy many rights and have many responsibilities. If you pay your taxes and abide by the federal and provincial law and order; you get the right to avail social benefits that the Canadian citizens receive like Health Care, Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance, Right to live, Study or work anywhere in Canada and Protection under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

CITIZENSHIP

Apply to become a Citizen of Canada if you lived in Canada as a PR for at least 1,095 days out of the last 5 years, prove your language skills, have filed your taxes, passed a test on your rights, responsibilities and knowledge of Canada.

WORK PERMITS

Most people need a work permit to work in Canada.

There are 2 types of work permits: open work permits and employer-specific work permits.

  • Open work permits- An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada. There are some exceptions
  • Employer-specific work permits-An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:
    a. the name of the employer you can work for
    b. how long you can work
    c. the location where you can work (if applicable)

LABOUR MARKET IMPACT ASSESSMENT (LMIA')

Canadian LMIA is a document that an employer in Canada needs to obtain before hiring most types of foreign workers. A positive LMIA confirms there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job at hand and that no Canadian worker is available to do the job. After a positive LMIA is issued, a temporary foreign worker has six months to use the LMIA to apply for a work permit.

PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM

This program is for workers who:

  • have the skills, education and work experience to contribute to the economy of a specific province or territory
  • want to live in that province, and
  • want to become permanent residents of Canada

Each province and territory has its own “streams” and requirements (immigration programs that target certain groups)
